Meet the Maker: Granny Mel's Story
A Legacy of Love, Crochet, and Handmade Memories
Every handmade creation has a story behind it. Before there was a business. Before there was a website. Before there was Granny Club Gifts, there was a little girl sitting with her grandma, learning how a simple strand of yarn could become something meaningful.
My love for crochet began when I was a young child, taught by my grandma, Grandma F. She was a steady, loving, devoted woman who showed me the beauty of creating things with your own two hands. Like many beginners, my first crochet projects were not exactly masterpieces. I spent plenty of time making very long chain “snakes” before I decided I was ready to graduate to something a little more substantial.
Eventually, I picked up a crochet hook with a bigger goal in mind: making a baby blanket.
That first blanket changed everything.
I discovered the joy of taking yarn and turning it into something cozy, useful, and full of love. I never really looked back.
Crochet Has Always Been More Than a Hobby
For me, crochet is a way to use my creativity to make something that brings comfort and happiness to others.
There is something calming about sitting down with a crochet project. The repetitive motion, the creativity, and the ability to watch something slowly come together helps quiet my mind. Of course, that doesn’t mean every project is perfect! There have definitely been moments of frustration when a pattern doesn’t turn out the way I imagined or when I have to undo hours of work and start again.
But that’s part of the process.
Crochet teaches patience. It teaches perseverance. And most importantly, it reminds me that something made by hand carries something special with it.
One of my favorite things about crochet is the endless possibility. If I ever get tired of making blankets, I can switch things up and create a sweater, a plush toy, or something completely new. There is always another pattern to try, another skill to learn, and another idea waiting to become reality.
The Blanket That Brought My Grandma’s Love Full Circle
One of the most meaningful crochet projects I have ever completed was one I actually finished on behalf of my grandma.
My grandma had a special tradition. When each of her grandchildren started high school, we got to flip through her crochet pattern books, choose the blanket pattern we wanted, and pick out our favorite colors. She would then spend years creating a graduation blanket just for us. Sometimes she would even add special cross-stitched designs and personal details that weren’t part of the original pattern.
It was her way of saying, “I love you.”
When my brother started high school, it was his turn. He chose his pattern, picked his colors, and Grandma F. got started on his blanket.
But sadly, she became very ill and passed away after only about 10 rows had been completed.
The blanket sat untouched for a while. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that it needed to be finished. I knew how to crochet, and even though I needed a little refresher, it came back to me like riding a bike. I knew I was the only person who could finish what she had started. So, between college classes and summer breaks, I worked on my brother’s graduation blanket. I carried that project with me knowing exactly what it represented—not just yarn and stitches, but a grandmother’s love and a promise she had made to her grandson.
When my brother’s graduation day arrived, I was able to present him with the finished blanket as a gift from our dearly departed Grandma F.
It was emotional. It was bittersweet. And it was one of the proudest moments of my life.
The blanket wasn’t perfect. There were a few mistakes along the way. But it was made with the same love and intention that my grandma put into every project she created.
And that is what handmade means.
How Granny Club Gifts Began
Years later, that same love for crochet became the foundation for Granny Club Gifts.
I started Granny Club Gifts with my sister-in-law, Granny Carina, after discovering that we both shared a love for creating handmade items. We both enjoyed making things, but as any maker knows, those creations can quickly start taking over your home when you don’t have somewhere to share them!
More importantly, starting Granny Club Gifts gave us a chance to create something together. It became a space where we could bond as sisters, encourage each other creatively, and share the things we love making with others.
The name Granny Club Gifts came from a joke between us. We would laugh that we were creating our own Granny Club. We are two younger women with young families—not actual grannies—but we share a very “granny” hobby that we absolutely love.
So we created our own club.
And now we invite others to be part of it.
The Heart Behind Every Creation
Today, Granny Carina remains my business partner and is still an important part of everything we do. While she has slowed down a little to focus on raising her feisty one-year-old, she continues to be an integral part of our operation and a talented creator behind many of the items in our shop. Together, our goal is bigger than simply selling handmade gifts.
We want to preserve the art of crochet. We want to create meaningful connections. We want to give people gifts that feel personal, thoughtful, and filled with love.
My favorite items to create are plush baby blankets made with Bernat Blanket Yarn. They are incredibly soft, cozy, and satisfying to make. They come together quickly enough that I don’t have time to get bored, and every finished blanket feels like something special.
But no matter what we create, the purpose remains the same. We want every person who receives one of our handmade gifts to feel the same love and intentionality they would feel receiving something made by a beloved grandmother. Because that is what we put into every stitch.
A Little About the Maker
When I’m not crocheting, I work full time as the Director of Insurance Operations at a financial firm. Life is busy, but crochet has always been my creative escape and a way to stay connected to something that brings me joy.
Outside of work and crochet, I love spending time with my husband exploring Detroit, discovering new places in our city, watching YouTube and movies, spending time with my family, and being involved with my church.
Granny Club Gifts is just one part of my life, but it represents something deeply important to me: creativity, family, tradition, and love.
Carrying Grandma F.’s Legacy Forward
Sometimes I wonder what my grandma would think if she could see Granny Club Gifts today. The answer is easy. She would be so proud. And she would be honored to know that she was the inspiration behind it all.
Every time I pick up my crochet hook, I carry a little piece of her with me. And with every blanket, plushie, and handmade gift we create, we hope to pass that same feeling along to you.
A feeling of warmth.
A feeling of love.
A feeling that someone took the time to make something just for you.
